We have work parties planned at Trellech Wet Meadow, the Local Wildlife Site reserve we manage together with Gwent Wildlife Trust.
Wet Meadow comprises five fields, 24 acres in total, in the north west of Trellech. The land lies between Roman Way, Trellech Surgery and the B4293 to the east and Red House Farm land and Wet Meadow/Loysey Wood to the west. The central point is at OS SO 500061. (Scroll down the page for a map.)
We have funding and support for an ambitious hedge planting session on Thursday 14th March. We’ll meet in the Wet Meadow/New Grove Meadows car park (shown on the map below) at 9.50am for a 10am start. We’ll be working together with volunteers from Wye Valley AONB and Gwent Wildlife Trust. The plants are being provided by The Long Forest Project, a joint project between Keep Wales Tidy and the Woodland Trust which has been featured in our newsletter and which is now well under way – read about it on www.longforest.cymru.
To prepare the site for the hedge planting we are also holding a work party on Thursday 7th February from 9.45 am. There’s a range of tasks from gentle raking to heavier clearing. Our volunteer warden, Dick Coates, has prepared a task list with the tools needed, so if you can come let us know and we’ll give you more details. Or you can just turn up for a while with a rake and cutters for lighter tasks.
Parking for these work parties is in the forest car park by New Grove Meadows. Travelling north from Trellech on the B4293, the track leading to the car park is on the right and is signed Wet Meadow (the track continues on to Lloysey Farm). See the Google map below for details.
A few things to note:
- There are sheep in the field, so no unsecured dogs please.
- If you would like to take away any green cordwood, can you let Dick know in advance please (on 01600 860 100 or contact the committee). 4×4’s will be able to drive into the field if necessary.
- Soup will be provided at lunch time!
We really appreciate MMG members’ help with these work parties: thank you in advance if you are able to come.
