Autumn Meeting: Wildlife Corridors in The Community

Sunday 9th November 2025 at Gwehelog Village Hall, 2pm to 4.30pm

Doors open 1.30pm, afternoon tea and cakes served in the break.

Join us for an afternoon sharing information and ideas, with speakers from Monmouthshire Meadows group including local members who are managing their land for nature

Speakers include well-known ecologist Dr Stephanie Tyler MBE and three local meadow owners.

This is a free event, but with limited parking spaces. If you can walk, come by bike or car share it will help. If you are coming by car or other vehicle, please fill in the form below to book a space.

The theme of the meeting is connectivity, that is how we can link up areas to allow wildlife to thrive.

Our members manage their grassland and gardens to conserve and enhance their wildlife value, providing habitat for a wealth of plant, animal and fungi species. But if these sites are isolated from each other, there is no opportunity for species to spread, and in-breeding within a site can weaken the existing population. Plants and fungi need appropriate habitat nearby to form new populations. Animals need wide areas to find their food and their partners, and predators need adequate levels of prey within their territory. No matter how well an individual site is managed for nature, there needs to be a connection with the wider environment for species to thrive.

Wildlife corridors provide this connectivity. They can be hedgerows or verges connecting gardens, or rivers and streams connecting grassland and woodland, or any other provision that allows species to travel across a wider area. Different species have different needs, and interventions can be small or large scale.

At our Autumn meeting we will look at practical ways in which landowners and householders can contribute to enhancing connectivity within their community, with specific local examples and principles that can be applied anywhere.

There will also be plenty of time to socialise with other meadow members and to chat about grassland management in general.
