First Courses at Kate’s Farm

UPDATE: New courses will be announced on Kate’s Farm web site where you can sign up to receive updates.

As most readers of this site will know, Kate Humble and her husband Ludo have taken over The Meend farm in Penallt.  The farm remains a working farm but will also help fund itself by being a centre for rural skills and animal husbandry.  Here’s an update from Kate on the first courses they will be running:

“We have put together three initial courses which are very specific to this time of year, but also give you the opportunity to take part in activities that will leave a long-lasting and important legacy at the farm. All these courses are running on Saturdays throughout March, and all will be very hands-on and practical.

COURSE 1 – HEDGE LAYING

Join our farmer Tim Stephens to learn the traditional method for laying a hedge.  This is a beautiful, natural way, of creating a field boundary that works well for livestock and is also good for wildlife.   The course will be very hands on and will take place entirely outside.  Participants will learn and take part in every aspect of preparing and laying the hedge, so numbers will be limited to just 6 people.  It will be quite a physical day, so come in clothes that will keep you warm and dry and you don’t mind getting muddy.  A delicious lunch and treats will keep your energy levels up!

DATE:  Saturday 3rd March – six people
TIME:  9.30am to 4.30pm
COST:  £160.00

BOOKING AND PAYING:  If you would like to book the hedge laying course please email:
bookings@humblebynature.com with ‘HEDGE LAYING’ as your subject.

We will then send you a Paypal link to enable you to pay us directly.  Once you have booked and paid for your course, we will confirm your booking and send you some suggestions for local accommodation, as well as directions to the farm.

COURSE 2 – ORCHARD PLANNING AND PLANTING

Join Horticulturalist Aisling Judge to discover the secrets of planning and planting a successful orchard.  Aisling’s approach is very practical, so although you will spend some time in the classroom, you will spend plenty of time outside discovering where best to place an orchard and how and where to plant the trees.  Be prepared to do some digging!  There will be plenty of rewards for your efforts – home-cooked food using lots of orchard ingredients to inspire you, and a cider tasting so you can learn about the different varieties and the art of blending.

The course will be for twelve people.

DATES:  Saturday 10th March
TIME:  9.30am to 4.30pm
COST:  £170.00

BOOKING AND PAYING: If you would like to book on an Orchard Planning and Planting course please e-mail:

We will then send you a Paypal link to enable you to pay us directly.  Once you have booked and paid for your course, we will confirm your booking and send you some suggestions for local accommodation, as well as directions to the farm.

COURSE 3 – ALL ABOUT TREES

How well do you know your trees?  Would you like to know more about Britain’s native trees and the part they play in our landscape?  Would you like to find out how to plant, where to plant, what to plant?  We are running this course in association with the Woodland Trust.  Join their expert on a Tree Safari around the farm and discover how to identify trees, even when they are not in leaf.  Learn which trees to plant for specific purposes and how to care for your trees once you’ve planted them.  Then do some planting!  As part of the Jubilee year celebrations the Woodland Trust are aiming to see a million trees planted around Britain.  You can be part of that legacy.  Your fun, informative day will involve walking in the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside, working up an appetite for a delicious,
hearty lunch. Then some spade work, by which time you’ll deserve something wicked for tea.

The course is for twelve people.

DATES:  Saturday 24th March
TIME:  9.30am to 4.30pm
COST:  £150.00

BOOKING AND PAYING:  If you would like to come on the All About Trees course please email:
bookings@humblebynature.com with ‘TREES’ as your subject.

We will then send you a Paypal link to enable you to pay us directly.  Once you have booked and paid for your course, we will confirm your booking and send you some suggestions for local accommodation, as well as directions to the farm.

These courses are all very seasonal, so we may not be able to run them again until next year.  Numbers are strictly limited, so we will only be able to accept the first confirmed and paid bookings.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to the farm.
